The Parent Navigator role was implemented in August of 2018 in the TCRCE and is an additional supportive role under the SchoolsPlus program. While the position of the Parent Navigator is located primarily in the Digby area as a 12-month outreach support for parents and caregivers, it is important to note that parents and caregivers throughout the Tri-Counties can also access support as needed.
The Parent Navigator works closely with parents and caregivers to assist them with navigating and accessing community resources and services within the school setting and extending out into the larger community. Parent Navigators form partnerships with services such as, family resource centers and municipal recreation departments.
Parent Navigators gather information and share their expertise and knowledge with parents and caregivers to helping answer questions related to their child’s academics, and their emotional and social well being. Parent Navigators can facilitate support groups for caregivers, assist with providing transportation to appointments and may occasionally support parents at school meetings.
Parent Navigators do not provide legal advice, counselling or speak for parents and caregivers.
The focus of the Parent Navigator role is to empower parents and caregivers to build on their confidence to be able to later on access these services themselves. The Parent Navigator works diligently to build trusting relationships with parents and caregivers, while protecting the confidentiality of student’s privacy and the families’ personal information.
