TCRCE Lieutenant Governor Award Recipients

On Wednesday, May 26, 2023, one individual student and one team from TCRCE were recognized at the Lieutenant Governor’s Respectful Citizenship Award Ceremony. All recipients were nominated for creating safe and inclusive spaces in schools and communities.

The ceremony took place at Paul O’Regan Hall, Halifax Central Library and was followed by a reception.

Each year, the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development administers the Respectful Citizenship Award. A Selection Committee representing the education system in Nova Scotia reviews all nomination packages submitted by schools across the province.

2023 TCRCE Lieutenant Governor’s Respectful Citizenship Award Recipients:

Amanda Murphy, grade: 11
Digby Regional – Alternative High School

Amanda Murphy is a grade 11 student at Digby Regional High School. Amanda was recognized for not letting barriers prevent her from excelling at Digby Alternative High. Digby Alternative High School is an alternate school for students like Amanda, who sometimes struggle to engage in their learning fully. The school opened in September 2022. Amanda is a mentor to other students at ALT High, a welcoming face to visitors, and an advocate for students whose voices are often not considered in minor details, such as decorating a space for them to be their authentic selves. Finally, Amanda continues to advocate for reliable mental health resources for students.

Students Feeding Students” – St. Mary’s Bay Academy

Team members: Kaeden Duval, grade: 10; Ethan Potvin, grade: 10; Jacob Robichaud, grade: 10

Recognizing the need to address food security within their community, staff and students at St. Mary’s Bay Academy operate a soup kitchen 2 times per week to offer a free lunch for all students. Kaden, Ethan and Jacob stand out as exemplary members who selflessly share their time before school, at recess, and during lunch to cut vegetables, prepare soup, serve lunch, and help clean up before attending afternoon classes. By committing their time and food literacy skills as a response to a complex, societal health issue faced by children, youth and their families these young men are deserving of the Lieutenant Governor’s Respectful Citizenship Award.
